Even though it gets you to the major 7th that is octave below it is easier to work from there. Minor 2nd is easy (play some gypsy scale and you'll get the idea), major 7th is kind of tricky but I learned it by playing much power chords and descending the root down one fret every now and then. It is important to play these all around the neck to begin to hear the sound of intervalls (distance) instead of the notes (pitches).
The ways I used for practising to hear them was playing triads of minor and major 3rds (root - 3rd - 5th) and eventually mixing them with 4ths or 2nds (to hear the sound of suspended chords).
2nd and 7th are just "relatives" for 4th and 5th, which are realtives to octave kind of (take 4th and then 5th for it and you get octave).Īfter you have "mastered" hearing the octave and dominants it's time to start with specific intervalls, the 3rds, the 6ths, minor 2nd, major 7th and the dimnished notes. Octave of open note is on the halfway of the strings length, which is the 12th fret, 5th of open note is on the 7th fret which divides the string in 1/3 & 2/3, 4th is on 5th fret which divides the string to 1/4 & 3/4. Relation of dominant notes pitches to root (some people call tonic) is very near of division of small whole numbers because they divide the strings to certain lengths. If pitch of octave is 2, pitch of 5th is 1.5, pitch of 4th is 1.33, pitch of 2nd is 1.5 * 1.5 / 2 = 1.125 (take 5th from the root, then take another 5th from that note and decend one octave), and 7th is 1.33 * 1.33 =. That is because they are very near of octave in musical sense. basicly major 2nd, 4th, 5th and minor 7th are kind of dominants. well I can't remember the theoretical name of the non-dominants. The thing is to develope a way to hear the music in a way that allows you to see the fretted notes in your mind while listening. I am kind of disapointed that no one has given any real advice so far.
